Verga Sets The Bar High

Thursday November 19th Laurence Verga kicked his campaign into high gear by making a major announcement. This announcement was made yesterday as he traveled throughout the district visiting Martinsville, Danville and Albemarle County. Verga signed a pledge consisting of ten points which he swears he will adhere to if he is elected to the 5th District’s Congressional Seat.

This pledge which covers everything from term limits, to earmarks, to second amendment rights is sure to get a reaction from both the right and the left. It will be interesting to see how his GOP opponents respond; we all know how the democrats will react.

This type of statement and outright commitment makes it clear for everyone to see that he is serious about “getting Washington back on track”. For Mr. Verga there will be no backing off this stance, he has published this pledge on his campaign website and will be sending copies to all GOP unit chairs as well as the mayors and supervisors of the towns in the 5th district. He has even stated he will be sending signed copies to all Democrat Chairs in the district as well.

I am sure some of his opponents will find some way to find fault with his pledge but I would challenge them to consider something similar, because this is what the citizens of this district really need, a true citizen legislator not a career politician whose only goal is to figure out how to stay in office.

Given the bipartisan corruption we’ve seen from the earmark process (Murtha, Goode) I think any conservative candidate needs to swear off earmarks. Will Hurt?

I think the self-term-limit pledge is an excellent idea. No complaints about the other 9 items either.

The more I read and hear about Verga, the more I like him.

Verga’s Ten points are nice but there is nothing inspiring nor new about them. What is more telling is the tepid response his tour got in terms on numbers of people attending. When offering free meals at every stop, to have fewer than ten people in Martinsville, twenty in Danville and maybe thirty in his home county shows the lack of excitement about his campaign. Why do you think he had such bad attendance ?

He had 25 at the Danville and had 60 at his Albemarle event. The restaurant was full. It was a week day event, the only people that were notified were those that had been involved in the party and in most cases were probably working. The turn out at the lunch was what was expected and the evening event was better then expected. They had little expectation of much of a turnout at the breakfast one.
