As if there is not enough uncertainty in the fifth district GOP race Scott Schultz an Albemarle County resident is preparing to enter the contest and will be making his official announcement today. The primary pool isn’t crowded enough so Mr. Schultz decided he is going to jump in to test the waters out.
I am not sure what would posses a person to leap into the primary race at this point. We already have a fairly diverse group of people in the race, from right of moderate to very conservative. Unless Mr. Shultz is a very moderate Republican or maybe even a liberal Republican(there are those), there would not seem to be a good reason to throw his hat in the ring unless he means to make things more difficult for the Republican Party and easier for Perriello.
With all that has been going on with the 5th District race it concerns me that this person would decide to jump into the fray this late in the game. I know there is another three and a half months to go to the primary but the other candidates have anywhere from a three to five month advantage on him in regards to name recognition. I hate to be a skeptic but being that he runs a small business I have to wonder if he is doing this to promote this business. Let’s face it how better to get free publicity for your business then by announcing a run for an office that is already getting national attention.

Since The Schilling Show broke this new two days ago (http://tr.im/OhUg), I haven’t been able to find if he’s running as a Republican or an Independent. Any info?
P.S. You GOTTA love the tr.im.ed URL — totally random!
It could just be on the encouragement of the establishment to fragment the opposition vote even more. It has happened in the past.
if he gets enough signatures on petitions, he can run in the Republican primary. but those petitions are clearly marked, before any signature is affixed, “Republican primary”. does that mean he is a Republican?
Here is Scott Schultz #8 on Joe Thomas for those who want to hear from our latest candidate http://bit.ly/aM57uW
1.Veteran
2.Conservative
3.Term Limits
4.doesn’t have a web page
5. He’ll listen to 5th
You can listen for yourself but I was underwhelmed.
This makes me want to puke! Most are fed up with the gaggle we have to sort through already and now we have another.
We have quite a problem here.
Assuming Schultz is a Tea Party-er.
Hurt and Boyd will split the non-Tea Party vote.
Leaving 6 candidates to split the Tea Party vote.
I’m glad people are starting to see Ken Boyd as “non-TEA Party”
I am curious why you say that Nigel? Is it just because he’s a current office holder? I really don’t think he’s hostile to the aims of the Tea Party but obviously you do.
Hi, Nigel! Nice piece in the Danville paper sunday; some good press for the TPs and for the 5th!
ok, stephen (& nigel, too):
how can boyd be anti-TEA party since he isn’t in the Bad, Bad Bad /sarc Republican establishment?
hey, i’m not for him in the primary, but he seemed pretty reasonable to me.
Well, I wasn’t saying that Boyd was anti-tea party. I just don’t see him as an attractive candidate to Tea Partyers, as he doesn’t have the passion about tea party ideals. And the other thing about him, which he shares with Hurt, is that he is an experienced politician. This is the last thing I am looking for right now. We need some new blood in Washington, to really shake things up. I suspect many Tea Partyers feel the same way.
Aye!
Agrees with Stephen.
Thanks VaPatriot! They ran an article on the lump report too. All on the front page! I went to the grocery store and saw this massive headline that said “COLEMAN’S CUP OF TEA” It was almos as surreal as the CNN coverage last year.
This comment is actually in response to an earlier post by Donna Martin making inaccurate statements about Virgil and the Republican Party.
@ Donna Martin –
I often look at the political blogs that focus on the Fifth District and I must say I was surprised when I came upon your comments last night. First I would say who are you to tell Virgil Goode to “please leave while people still have respect for you.”? Exactly who are you to tell anyone to join or leave the Republican Party?
And then you say –
“If you are mad at the Republican Party and want revenge please don’t do this to Robert. He doesn’t deserve it. Your loss to Perriello was not because of the Republican Party and you know it but can’t face the truth. Stop the madness before you destroy yourself and your political standing in Virginia politics.”
Wow. Okay. Let’s look at some recent history of Virgil Goode and the Republican Party –
Virgil was asked by Delegate Danny Marshall to come to several events in 2009 in Danny’s race against former Danville Mayor Seward Anderson. Virgil gladly went and spoke for Danny.
Virgil attended several rallies for McDonnell/Bolling/Cuccinelli and so did I.
Virgil was asked to be the “special guest” at a fundraiser in Martinsville for Lt. Governor Bill Bolling. He obliged. We both went and it was a good event.
Virgil was asked to come to the Roanoke County Republican Shrimp Festival to speak for the Republican ticket. He went and spoke and so did I.
Virgil was asked to attend a fundraiser as a special guest for Troy Bird who was running against Onzlee Ware. He went.
Virgil was asked to attend an event for William Cleveland who was in a tough race against Gwen Mason. He and I both went.
Virgil was asked to attend an event for Annie B. Crockett Stark as a special guest. He and I both went and he gave a pitch for her.
Virgil worked hard for Ed Creed. A guy who stepped up to challenge Delegate Ward Armstrong – probably the most partisan democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates – and Ed had a good showing despite the tremendous odds against him. And – the Fifth District Republicans offered financial assistance, but apparently it never happened.
Virgil was asked by Pittsylvania Unit Chairman Ronnie Mayhew to attend a Pittsylvania County Republican Breakfast in September 2009. He went and so did I. We were there with Senator Hurt and Delegate Merricks and Delegate Marshall.
Virgil was asked to attend the Danville/Pittsylvania Republican Committee meeting in late October to rally the troops and he went and so did I.
Of course in 2007, Virgil’s name and image were used on nearly every mail piece that Charles Poindexter sent out. I believe you were working for Mr. Poindexter at the time. Later you would go on to get mad at Mr. Poindexter and the Smith Mountain Lake Republican Women and the Franklin County Republican Committee and you sent out an email in January 2008 saying “ Kathy and I chose to leave politics after having to endure attacks by our fellow Republicans from the SML Republican Women, the Franklin County Republican Committee and members of the Charles Poindexter Cabinet .” I still have the email. Based on your comments I do not see how you are qualified to tell someone when they should leave the Republican Party.
Now for the record Virgil did not trash Robert Hurt at the Franklin County TEA Party meeting. He was asked by those in attendance what the position was of the candidates on TAXES, social issues, etc. He told them that to his knowledge Hurt had a pro-life voting record, but he did vote for Mark Warner’s 1.2 Billion dollar tax increase.
We did have a nice meeting at our house last Sunday (2/7/10) with Senator Hurt. I served him chocolate chip cookies. He seemed to really enjoy them. He told us that he valued our advice and counsel. We have also talked with several other candidates and have encouraged them. We also urge citizens to attend the debates and forums so that they can evaluate the candidates and their positions.
Donna – I urge you to attend the next forum with all the republican candidates on Saturday, February 27 at Brookville High School and see how the candidates perform and answer questions.
Lucy Goode I would like to thank you for your service to the 5th.I feel Virgil may be the only person that can bring everyone together. I have heard ALOT of people say how much they wish he would run again the support he would get could NOT be matched by any of the other candidates. Virgil could put together a strong group of volunteers in a short time. Some people are waiting to see who wins the primary before they donate any money but if Virgil were to jump into the race this would not be the case.Lucy please take a good look at the last PPP poll Virgil can win by a landslide.
I’d vote for Virgil (and Lucy) before I’d vote for anyone else in this race! I know it’s hard to let ignorant comments stand, and that correcting those errors often don’t work so thanx for reminding some people what a statesman Virgil is.
We need to find out if any of our candidates are Truthers (like the “Tea Party endorsed” candidate running for Governor of Texas).
There are a few candidates in the race with some strong ties to Ron Paul and it would be interesting/helpful to know if his flirtations with Trutherism extend as well.
Same thing with Birthers.
No Truthers! No Birthers!
From the day Virgil became an Independent, he has helped GOP candidates over and oven and over. No one has traveled more miles nor encouraged more people to elect conservatives to office than Virgil There are many who would not be in office today without him. To question his efforts is just wrong. He is a man to be much admired. That we lost him as our congressman is a shame.
Scott Schultz AKA Philip ap Griffith is a Knight Marshal in the Shire of Isenfir !?

It seems to me that the national group, the Tea Party Patriots, who have disavowed any link to the recent for-profit Tea Party convention, should have a say on the advisability of TP-ers running independent candidates against BOTH a Republican and a Democrat in an election, especially when the Republican has indicated a willingness to incorporate TP ideals/issues into his own platform and apparently wants to work with TP-ers.
With that in mind, I am copying most of an email I received today (I am a member) from the Tea Party Patriots:
“Dear Fellow Tea Party Patriots,
“There is much talk of the formation of a third political party based on the tea party movement.
“Tea Party Patriots is issuing this statement in order to make it clear that we are not associated with any attempts to form a third party. Additionally, we believe that such efforts are unproductive and unwise at this time. The history of third party movements in this country is one of division and defeat. We believe that it is instead time for all Americans to rise up and demand appropriate reform within their own parties. The mechanisms exist for citizens to participate in their parties, and to drive their parties in the right direction.
“The Tea Party Patriots encourage all citizens to get involved in the party process, and to reshape their parties into something in which they may once again believe. This country does not belong to any one party, nor does it belong to the career politicians. This country belongs to the citizens. As Benjamin Franklin once said, “We have given you a republic madam, if you can keep it.” The founders knew that it would be our sacred obligation as citizens to get involved, and to work hard to hold on to this great nation. We have much work to do, and future generations will look back in judgment. We hope you will join us in preserving the republic.
“You are the heart and soul of the Tea Party Movement. Thank you for promoting the causes of fiscal responsibility, constitutionally limited government, and free markets with us!

Debbie Dooley, Mike Gaske, Kellen Giuda, Ryan Hecker, Jenny Beth Martin, Mark Meckler, Sally Oljar, Diana Reimer, Billie Tucker, and Dawn Wildman

I, VaPatriot, invite commentary and responses on this sensible guidance.
And that’s the way it is………
thanks VaPatriot.
on another blog, i believe the word “oust” was used to describe what the Tea Party planned to do to Republican Unit members.
every living voter in the 5th has to focus & pull together to beat Perriello. “ousting” achieves nothing.
